Purpose

To study and compare the safety, efficacy and outcome of 80 micron flap versus 90 micron femtosecond flap LASIK.

Setting/Venue

a single centre contralateral eye study conducted on participants undergoing FS-LASIK at Dr R. P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS, New Delhi

Methods

the study was done in patients undergoing FS-LASIK between November and December 2021. Inclusion criteria were myopia upto -8.00 diopters(D) and astigmatism up to -3.00 D and no previous surgeries. All patients were tested preoperatively and on day 1, 1 week and 3 weeks for uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), manifest refraction, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), pentacam, iTrace. The Zeiss Visumax was used for flap construction and the Zeiss MEL 90 excimer for refractive treatment. Flap thickness was measured at week 1 with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).

Results

48 eyes of 24 patients were included in the study. Mean decimal uncorrected visual acuity was comparable between both the groups preoperatively(P=0.868), 1week (P=1.00) and 3 week(P=1.000). there was no loss of CDVA lines. Mean preoperative pachymetry was 499.8 micron and was comparable between 2 groups (P=0.336). higher order aberration between the 2 groups were comparable preoperatively(P=0.4068), at post op week 1(P=0.4395) and post op week 3(P=0.4458). there was no incidence of suction loss. Opaque bubble layer was noted in 2 eyes In each group.

Conclusions

the use of ultrathin flaps using Zeiss Visumax was safe, reliable and reproducible. Both 80 micron and 90-micron flap showed excellent postoperative day 1 visual acuity and can be safely used to maintain a safe percentage of tissue altered.
