Purpose

To compare the visual acuity, corneal haze, safety and efficacy

between Trans epithelial (TPRK) and Alcohol Assisted Photorefractive Keratectomy

(AAPRK).

Setting/Venue

PRASAD NETRALAYA SUPER SPECIALITY EYE HOPSITAL ,UDUPI

Methods

This prospective ,interventional, case control study included 160eyes of 80 patients with mild to moderate myopia(-0.50 D to -6.00D)&myopic astigmatism(-0.50D to--2.00D).TPRK&AAPRK was done in right&Le eye of same patient respectively &followed up on day 1,day 5,1month,6&12 months post surgery. Outcome  measures of epithelial healing , Mean vision, corneal haze, Efficacy index and Safety index were taken

Results

Pre operative mean(+/-SD) refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE) were

-2.49(+/- 1.68D) in TPRK group and -2.34(+/- 1.87 D) in AAPRK group . Epithelial

healing was significantly less in TPRK (p value- <0.0001). haze was more (p value- 0.24) in TPRK, but not

statistically significant . Mean uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and safety index

were similar in both groups. Efficacy index was 0.73 in TPRK group and 0.75 in

AAPRK group and there was no statistically significant difference between the two

groups.

Conclusions

TPRK and AAPRK produce almost similar results and both are

predictable, effective and safe for correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism
