Purpose
The aim of this work is to study the clinical characteristics as well as the complications related to cataract surgery by phaco emulsification in pseudocapsular exfoliation.
Setting/Venue
adult ophthalmology department, hospital 20 august ibn rochd university hospital center
Methods
Retrospective and comparative study from January 2019 to September 2021 concerning patients with cataracts by phaco-emulsification in our department.
Results
The two groups consisted of 107 eyes each. The sex ratio of the pseudocapsular exfoliationgroup was 1.36, with a mean age of 72 years. There was a predominance of the bilateral form at 66.6%. Chronic open-angle glaucoma was associated in 32.7% of cases in the pseudocapsular exfoliation group versus 6.5% of cases in the control group. Phacoemulsification was performed in 100% of cases, conversion to extracapsular extraction was performed in 10 patients. Postoperative visual acuity was slightly higher in the control group (94% versus 87% in the pseudocapsular exfoliation group at D 30).
Conclusions
The pseudo-exfoliative syndrome must be sought during the pre-surgical cataract assessment. The postoperative result in the pseudocapsular exfoliation group is substantially comparable to the result of the control group, within the framework of optimal care.
