Purpose
The incidence of fungal corneal ulcer is higher in developing countries.Fungal ulcer typically involves the deep stroma,and
topical antifungal medications are large molecules that have poor stromal penetration
and less drug delivery due to avascularity of the cornea
Setting/Venue
A single center, prospective study done at upgraded department of Ophthalmology, SMS
Medical College, Jaipur (Rajasthan), INDIA
Methods
Blood sample of subjects was taken in plain vial and centrifuge it then
extracted the buffy coat part and used it as intrastromal injections.
Intrastromal injections were given gently at multiple sites of
lesion under topical and peribulbar anesthesia.
Results
The significant results were found after 1st dose of injections.
The periphery of lesions was found free of fungus, scarring on the periphery, fuzzy margins
loss and hypopyon resolved significantly, they all features indicating dead fungus and
patients improved clinically. on multiple serial slit lamp examination, we observed the following improvement. patients reported significant improvement in term of pain, photophobia, watering etc.
Conclusions
Further studies are required.
Results are satisfactory in the management of fungal corneal ulcer.
