Purpose
Aim of this study is to compare surgical outcomes and safety profile of Standard PRK and Streamlight PRK in thin corneas( less than 500 micron) in mild to moderate myopia with or without mild astigmatism.
Setting/Venue
Tertiary eye centre
Methods
We compared 16 eyes in each group of Standard PRK and Streamlight PRK for visual outcome( UCVA),surgical time, epithelial healing time, postoperative pain, visual rehabilitation and postoperative corneal haze
Results
Epithelial healing time is faster in Streamlight PRK group ( 2-3 days) in comparison to Standard PRK (5-7 days).Epithelium thickness returns to normal thickness faster in Streamlight PRK as visualised by epithelial mapping.Surgical time taken was faster and postoperative pain was significantly lower in Streamlight PRK.Visual outcome was same in both groups.None of the patients developed postoperative haze for a follow up period of 3 months.
Conclusions
A long visual recovery period and significant postoperative pain has been a shortcoming of PRK.Streamlight PRK has faster postoperative healing and lower postoperative pain.
