Methods
A cohort of patients who underwent simultaneous bilateral (same day) intraocular lens surgery procedures with multifocal implants were analysed. The setting was private refractive surgery clinics. Monocular and binocular UCDVA and UCNVA scores were recorded 1 day, 1 month and 3 months post operatively. Patient reported outcome scores to include overall satisfaction were recorded at 1 day, 1 month and 3 months postoperatively. Clinical assessments, including any complications, were recorded in the electronic medical record.
Results
Total simultaneous procedures were 4182 (2091 patients). Three months postoperatively, 90.5% had binocular UCDVA of 6/6 or better; 90.5% had binocular UCNVA of N6 or better. Change in BCDVA of >2 lines was measured at 3 months as 0.8% of simultaneous group. Complication rates were analysed against industry expected norms and were satisfactory. Patients reported being “Very Satisfied” or “Satisfied” with outcome in 85.9% of the simultaneous group.
Conclusions
Simultaneous Bilateral IOL surgery is safe and effective. It is well accepted by patients in this modern day era, both those with cataract and those seeking refractive lens exchange. Complication profiles are acceptable. High levels of postoperative satisfaction and quality of life outcomes were reported.
