With nearly one-third of US physicians now employed by managed care organizations, but only one per cent of ASCRS membership, outgoing ASCRS President Richard A Lewis made outreach to younger employed physicians a focus of his tenure. More than 50 ophthalmologists employed by Kaiser Permanente joined ASCRS as a result. Limits on technology imposed by government put US surgeons at a disadvantage, said incoming ASCRS President Robert J Cionni MD. He sees collaboration with surgeons across the globe as critical, and pledged to make it a priority in the coming year.
