The XXXV Congress of the ESCRS in Lisbon was the Society’s largest gathering to date. More than 9,800 delegates travelled to Lisbon for the Congress, where they enjoyed thousands of presentations and videos. On the final day of the Congress, Oliver Findl and Boris Malyugin sat down with a panel of experts to discuss the best of these, looking at the various competition winners and engaging with the ideas on show.
The first panel consisted of ESCRS President-elect Béatrice Cochener, Abhay Vasavada and Isabel Prieto. They discussed the video highlights, starting with overall winner Tadahiko Kozawa from Japan, whose video demonstrated a New Propeller Turbo Tip for torsional PEA.
Other winners included, Liliana Werner who won first prize in the innovation category for her video Fun with Femtosecond Lasers: Episode II—Adjustment of IOL Power. First prize in the scientific section went to Mayumi Nagata, Japan, for a video on the Prevention of anterior capsulorhexis contraction. The panel examined two videos from the special and difficult cases section: first was second-placed Victoria de Rojas, Spain, with his video on Uveitis-glaucoma- hyphema syndrome: Unusual cases associated with in-the- bag placement of intraocular lens. Next came Marina Shanturova of Russia in third place, with her video on Lamellar Autokeratoplasty: Method of Choice to Treat Trophic Corneal Ulcers on Only Eye.
In a second panel discussion, Oliver Findl and Boris Malyugin were joined by Zoltan Nagy, Filomena Ribeiro, ESCRS President David Spalton and Rudy MMA Nuijts. They discussed the key presentations at the Congress. These included the landmark PREMED study on changing patterns in cataract surgery, which was led by Dr Nuijts, and the Binkhorst lecture, delivered by Dr Malyugin and entitled Cataract surgery in high-risk eyes: lessons learned.
