Preventing PCO proliferation

Clear lens exchange may be indicated for children with severe anisometropia or amblyopia, but secondary cataracts and changing refractions make it a challenge, Ioannis G Pallikaris MD PhD, Crete, told the Combined Symposium of Cataract and Refractive Societies at the 2015 ASCRS/ASAO Symposium in San Diego.
A peripheral capsule reconstructor he designed may help prevent PCO proliferation by expanding the periphery of the capsular bag, creating a barrier to cell proliferation across the posterior capsule. The device has been successfully tested with three-piece and one-piece conventional lenses, as well as the Tassignon bag-in-lens.
Refractive stability may be enhanced with a multicomponent IOL with a base rear optic inside the bag and a removable second optic outside the bag, making it easier to exchange as the patient’s prescription changes.
