Professor Alan Mackay-Sim, a biomedical scientist who helped restore mobility in a quadriplegic person for the first time,  has been named 2017's Australian of the Year.

Prof Mackay-Sim, who is Director of the National Centre for Adult Stem Cell Research at Griffith University in Brisbane, has championed the use of stem cells from the nose in understanding the biological bases of brain disorders and diseases such as schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease and Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia. https://www.griffith.edu.au/professional-page/professor-alan-mackay-sim
