Expertise and education to the fore at 25th ESCRS Winter Meeting Virtual 2021

This year’s Winter Meeting will offer a first-rate scientific programme covering every key aspect of ophthalmology

ALTHOUGH it will not be the silver anniversary celebration that the organisers originally hoped for, the 25th Winter Meeting of the ESCRS will still seek to deliver world-class education and expertise for a global audience over the coming days, Prof. Dr. Rudy MMA Nuijts said at the opening ceremony. “As president of the ESCRS, it is my great honour to welcome you to our 25th Winter Meeting. We should be together in Krakow this weekend, but due to the ongoing COVID pandemic we have to meet virtually once again. We are delighted that more than 1,500 delegates are registered for the Meeting so far, and we expect more people to join us during the weekend,” he said. Prof Nuijts expressed his gratitude to the Cataract and Refractive Surgery Section of the Polish Ophthalmological Society for their invaluable assistance in organising the meeting. “While we cannot join our Polish friends in Krakow, we will still benefit from the expertise of their speakers and their contribution to the programme,” he said. Prof Nuijts said that this year’s Winter Meeting will offer a first-rate scientific programme with the usual wide range of symposia, free paper sessions, instructional courses, poster and video sessions, the Young Ophthalmologists Programme and satellite meetings covering every key aspect of ophthalmology. Prof Nuijts said that the ESCRS had listened closely to feedback from its members in introducing greater opportunities for exchange and interaction at the Winter Meeting. “During any live session delegates can post a question to the chairpersons, and a 30-minute live question-and- answer session will take place after each main symposium. There will also be the opportunity to join a breakout room after these sessions, to take part in further face-to-face discussion,” he said. The “Meet The Experts” sessions will also provide an opportunity to take part in face-to-face discussions with top experts about a range of hot topics, and a new video chat function to network with friends and colleagues has also been added to the meeting interface. Speaking on behalf of the Cataract and Refractive Surgery Section of the Polish Ophthalmological Society, Professor Ewa Mrukwa-Kominek welcomed the collaboration with the ESCRS, which she said would contribute to another successful meeting this weekend.
