For over 30 years, the ESCRS has been at the forefront of education, research and clinical reporting for ophthalmologists around the world. Every year, thousands of ophthalmologists gather in European cities to learn from each other – passing on the wisdom gained over years of practice in courses, as well as reporting on research, experiences and how challenges were overcome.
But is meeting twice a year enough? Our curiosity – and responsibility – to learn and improve doesn’t stop and start twice a year. We can’t travel much more than this with busy clinical, research and educational activities in our home countries. The ESCRS has considered this challenge and can say: we are ready when you are.
“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself”
John Dewey
The ESCRS is launching a range of online educational resources that will help you stay up-to-date with the latest research, learn modern techniques from the masters, and even delve into the fascinating tapestry of ophthalmic history.
From a single website, education.escrs.org, you will find resources that you can access whenever you want. Spend hours, or just a spare 10 or 15 minutes, learning with:
The ESCRS Player, which is open to everyone and already has a range of media, including EuroTimes Eye Contact interviews, Videos of the Month highlighting notable cases, the Video Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Young Ophthalmologists videos, and more. Videos demonstrating elegant and efficient surgical procedures will soon be hosted. Would you like to have your videos showcased? If so, send them to: videos@escrs.org
JCRS Online Case Reports, to see how theory is applied in practice, with in-depth accounts that include videos and text of interesting and notable cases
Landmark Journal Articles, from a range of peer-reviewed journals which have been selected by the ESCRS Publications Committee, and can be accessed free of charge through the ESCRS Education Portal
ESCRS members can access even more resources through the portal, free as part of their membership:
ESCRS On Demand hosts all the presentations from ESCRS meetings, going back to 2007 (Stockholm): didactic courses, symposia, clinical research, ePosters, videos, competition winners and more. A new look for ESCRS On Demand is being developed, which will offer easier search and navigation
ESCRS iLearn offers over 30 hours of assessed, accredited and interactive online courses. Trainers can use the Task List to assign courses for their trainees and monitor their progress – all free for ESCRS members
“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”
Isaac Newton
An online museum is also being developed. We are currently accepting submissions, with videos and photographs being digitised to share with the community. This is a unique opportunity to see how far we have come in ophthalmic medical science and practice, and understand how we got here. If you, or someone you know, have have something of interest, please contact: museum@escrs.org
Certifying Excellence
The ESCRS is also developing an examination in partnership with the EBO that will certify excellence in cataract and refractive surgery.
