DIDACTIC TEXT LAYS SOLID FOUNDATION

I love focused, didactic ophthalmology texts in which each clearly defined symptom, sign or specific diagnosis is tackled separately and on its own accord. Clinical Pathways in Neuro-Ophthalmology: An Evidence-Based Approach (Thieme), edited by Drs Smith, Lee and Brazis, intends to “lay a solid foundation” by approaching problems systematically. Simplicity is the goal. Incorporating my personal favourite tool, the flow-chart, common problems like transient vision loss, visual field defects and diplopia are handled with as much care as rarer and more difficult entities like supranuclear disorders of gaze and optic disc oedema with a macular star and neuroretinitis. The text is most appropriate for ophthalmology residents, especially those preparing for a neuro-ophthalmology rotation or exam, as well as general ophthalmologists looking to refresh their knowledge.
