A virtual meeting but with real exchanges, passionate debate, and high-quality science and research – these are the ingredients that defined the 11th EuCornea Congress, said Jesper Hjortdtal, President of EuCornea at the opening ceremony. Welcoming delegates to the virtual congress, Dr Hjortdal said that while the COVID-19 pandemic had made a physical meeting impossible this year, the organisers were committed to making the best of a difficult situation. “As always we have worked hard to bring high-quality scientific content from some of the most renowned world experts in the field of cornea. We have five keynote sessions with expert moderators and speakers and we will also enjoy an excellent selection of presented posters and case presentations. Delegates can also avail of a first-rate technical skills course on demand,” he said. As part of the opening ceremony, Donald T.H. Tan from Singapore delivered the EuCornea Medal Lecture on the topic of “To DMEK or not to DMEK – the role of registries and innovation”. In a wide-ranging and entertaining lecture, Dr Tan spoke about the paradigm shift in corneal transplantation techniques in recent years away from penetrating keratoplasty towards lamellar and endothelial keratoplasty approaches and explained how national and international registries could help to inform better management of these challenging cases.
