Corneal anesthetic abuse and bilateral fungal keratitis

To report a case of topical ocular anesthetics abuse and bilateral fungal keratitis


Birinci Eye Hospital


A 41 year-old man was reffered to our hospital due to persistant epitelial defect,infiltrates and pain.


The patient is apt to the chronic misuse of topical anesthetics (0.5% proparacaine hydrochloride) due to his work condition.Slit lamp findings included large central corneal epithelial defect, focal infiltrates and hypopion in both of eyes. Topical anesthetic was discontinued and amnion membrane transplantation was performed.After 17 days of the procedure infiltrates was increased.Subsequent corneal culture was obtained and Candida albicans was grown bilaterally.


Corneal superinfection with Candida may occur during topical anesthetic abuse.Any case of infiltrates with anesthetic abuse, a sample for should be culture should be taken.
