Abstract Details

To report a microbial keratitis in a patient after three years’ continuous wear of the same therapeutic contact lens.

Baskent university Faculty of Medicine, Ophthalmology Department

A 56 years old male patient was admitted to our hospital with ocular pain, redness and vision loss in his left eye. This patient had a history of continuous wear of the same therapeutic contact lens for 3 years without removing. Initial slit lamp examination showed central corneal infiltration and epithelial defect. Microbiological examinations were performed from corneal scrapings and contact lens. The culture results from contact lens and corneal scrapings were all positive for coagulase- negative staphylococcus. The patient was treated with 5% (50mg/ml) fortified vancomycin. After treatment, the corneal epithelial defect completely healed, and residual subepithelial corneal opacity was observed.

The patients should be accurately informed of the use of therapeutic contact lenses.
