Abstract Details

To find the prevalence of small pupil cases among phacoemulsification cases.

University Hospital “Dr. Georgi Stranski” – Pleven, Bulgaria

Medical records of patients that had cataract surgery during one year period were reviewed. Local anaesthesia was used and all operations were performed by the same surgeon.

A total of 276 cases were reviewed. In 25 cases (9 %) there was small pupil. Causes for the small pupil were PESy, glaucoma, diabetes, uveitis. In 16 cases iris retractors were used.

Small pupil is a serious obstacle for phacoemulsification surgery and represents a significant risk of failure if ignored.
