Corneal endothelial cell loss in post-penetrating keratoplasty eyes with domestic and imported corneas after phacoemulsification

To compare the changes in endothelial cell density (ECD) in patients who underwent cataract extraction with phacoemulsification after penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) with domestic and imported corneas.

Patients who had PKP with domestic donor corneas (Group 1) and imported donor corneas (Group 2) underwent cataract extraction with phacoemulsification between April 2013 and June 2014 were included in this study. The time interval between PKP and cataract extraction was at least six month. The endothelial cell count was evaluated with noncontact specular microscopy before phacoemulsification and 1, 3 months after cataract surgery.


In group 1, 11 eyes of 11 patients and in group 2, 9 eyes of 9 patients were evaluated. The mean corneal ECD was 2841,55±335,46 (2380-3497) cells/mm2 in group 1and 2504,11±185,16 (2300-2870) cells/mm2 in group 2 preoperatively (p=0,58). ECD decreased progressively throughout the follow-up in two groups. There was no statistically significant in the mean amount of change in ECD between the two groups from preoperatively to 1 month and 3 month postoperatively (p=0,20,p=0,31).


Related to the amount of change in ECD after cataract surgery, imported corneas seem as credible as domestic corneas. To reach the exact outcome, more detailed and long lasting studies are necessary.
