Zeiss’ new IOLMaster 700 with Total Keratometry measures corneas front and back, so you can replace generic posterior cornea constants with precise patient measurements. Curvature of the posterior cornea can throw off toric IOL power calculations by half a dioptre or more, often resulting in significant over-correction of with-the-rule astigmatism and under-correction of against-the-rule astigmatism. The new IOLMaster 700 with Total Keratometry, introduced by Carl Zeiss Meditec at the 36th Congress of the ESCRS in Vienna,Austria helps solve the problem by measuring both anterior and posterior cornea curvature. To process Total Keratometry data Zeiss also introduced the Z CALC 2.0 software package. Z CALC 2 incorporates new formulae that make use of posterior cornea data rather than constants to calculate toric power and axis values. The new package also allows calculations based on posterior cornea power constants for practices without access to posterior cornea measurements. In another advance for treating cataract patient with astigmatism, Zeiss has introduced the AT LARA toric extended depth of focus IOL. In one study, the AT LARA provided mean distance corrected monocular visual acuity of logMAR 0.2 or better from 0.0 to -2.0 dioptres, giving continuous sharp vison from distance to intermediate ranges. The Zeiss CALLISTO eye markerless alignment system allows efficient and accurate implantation during surgery. Integrating data from multiple diagnostic and treatment devices not only improves patient outcomes it also improves practice workflow and efficiency, said Ludwin Monz PhD, president and CEO of Carl Zeiss Meditec. Efficiency will be more important as populations age and reimbursement falls, he added. “We are trying to come up with solutions that help with the growing numbers of patients.”
