(6) Moloney: "Descemetorhexis for Fuchs' corneal dystrophy"
The human corneal endothelium is essential for the maintenance of corneal clarity via transcellular pumping of fluid. It is widely held that this is a non regenerating layer in vivo. Repair occurs not by mitosis but via enlargement and migration of existing cells, with limited capacity for healing to pre-entered states. Despite this, many reports have demonstrated a spontaneous return of corneal clarity following Descemet trauma or removal.
