The effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on central corneal thickness

This study aimed to investigate the effect of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) treatment on central corneal thickness using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).

Forty healthy subjects (20 males and 20 females) undergoing HBO treatment were enrolled. Best-corrected visual acuity was recorded before HBO treatment, and anterior and posterior segment examinations were performed. Central corneal thickness was measured with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) before and immediately after HBO treatment, which lasted 120 min at 2.5 atmospheres absolute with three 30-min oxygen and two 5-min air-breathing periods.


Forty healthy nondiabetic subjects (20 males and 20 females, mean age 58.5 ᄆ 8,5 years) were enrolled. The subjects were prescribed HBO treatment for problem wounds (n = 25), radionecrosis (n = 5), sudden hearing loss (n = 8), chronic osteomyelitis (n = 2). The central corneal thickness was significantly reduced after HBO treatment (575.5 ᄆ34.8 vs. 568.0 ᄆ 34.8 p<0,05).


A single exposure to HBO treatment reduced the central corneal thickness in healthy subjects. However, the change in central corneal thickness was minor.
