Abstract Details


Preventing blindness in our country and control visual acuity in children .The USAID and LCIF project for children with vision impairments (CwVIP), is a 6 year project that began in October 2014 and is still being implemented by the SEEU . With examinations and data obtained, doctors provide early detection and prevention of possible visual impairment, as well as a recommendation for additional examinations and possibility of preventing severe eye diseases in children from 2.5 to 6 years of age. Both ophthalmologists and competent institutions will have access to the number of children with impaired vision in Republic of Macedonia.


Screenings were conducted in the kindergartens of 8 cities (Skopje, Veles, Stip, Bitola, Ohrid, Tetovo, Strumica, Gostivar, Debar, Kavadarci, Kumanovo) and their surrounding areas. Some rural areas, where the medical care of the population is inefficient or scarce, were involved as well. Analysis of the data were done in SEEU.


Screening was carried out with state-of-the-art technology, portable auto refractometer 2 WIN Adaptica 15 appliances. All examinations are entered into a central electronic system developed by the SEEU. Components that were examined are: astigmatism, asymmetry, hypermetropia and myopia. Results from each child is recorded by a special program that is synchronized in a database which gives us the information, if the person should be sent for an additional examination.


More than 18,000 children aged 2.5 to 6 years have been examined. 10% of children there are anomalies and 1,112 are female and 974 are male. The revealed conditions are: - Astigmatism, Asymmetry, Hypermetropia, Myopia Other ocular pathologies were found as well.


This project obtain a complete picture of the condition of eye diseases in the youngest population in the Republic of Macedonia. It also helps in collecting, registering and analyzing the data obtained from these screenings, as well as the application of statistical methods in studying certain problems, requesting causation and in the scientific and research work in ophthalmology.
