To report a case with solitary circumscribed neuroma of the conjunctiva

Ege University Department of Ophthalmology

Histopathologically proven case report

A 42-year-old male presented with a 4 week history of a mass in the lower palpebral conjunctiva near the punctum.Excisional biopsy of the lesion was performed.Histopathologically the mass was composed of Schwann cells with slender tapered nuclei, fine chromatin and inconspicuous nucleoli.Immunohistochemically S100 protein was positive for the spindle cells and neurofilament staining was also positive for axons within fascicles. In the light of these histopathological findings tumor diagnosis was solitary circumscribed neuroma.Comprehensive evaluation for multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2b(MEN-2b) was performed which included endocrinologist, gastroenterologist, orthopedist. No MEN-2b sign and no family history were detected, the diagnosis was finalized as solitary circumscribed neuroma.

Solitary circumscribed neuroma is a quite rare condition and the differential diagnosis from the other peripheral nerve sheat tumors is based on the histopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation. As the tumor can be related with MEN-2b systemic investigation for MEN-2b is crucial.
