Abstract Details


To study the prevalence and risk factors associated with development of computer vision syndrome( CVS) in medical students, in present era where there is increased use of tablets and laptops for studying and research.

A sample size of 100 medical students attending a university in India, were taken for study .It is a descriptive study. A questionnaire was used to collect data regarding symptoms of CVS, age ,sex, duration of wearing glasses, usage of tablets, laptops, etc. The collected data was entered in SPSS (statistical package for social science) 21.0.


Sample size was 100, ranging from the age 18-30 yrs. There was a higher prevalence of CVS in female gender, use of spectacles and contact lenses, daily use of hand held devices. The average duration of computer use was 1.4 hrs, where as that of hand held devices was 4.1 hrs. The most frequent mode of studying was books followed by mobile phones and tablets.


There is a high prevalence of CVS among medical students. The use of tablets and mobile phones, long duration of exposure, female gender, use of spectacles and contact lenses were all associated significantly with presence of CVS.
