Abstract Details

To investigate the efficacy and safety of using of 3% trehalose and 0.15% sodium hyaloronic acid combination (Thealoz Duo) ophthalmic solution for ocular discomfort and tear-film stability in eyes after cataract surgery.

Department of Ophthalmology, Dr. Nafiz Korez Hospital, Ankara, Turkey.

This study included patients who underwent unilateral cataract surgery. After cataract surgery, the study group used topical antibiotic - steroid, 3% trehalose and 0.15% sodium hyaluronic acid combination, whereas the control group used only topical antibiotic – steroid. Preoperative, schirmer test was performed and tear breakup time (TBUT) was measured. Schirmer testi, TBUT, ocular surface disease index (OSDI), frequency of dry-eye symptoms evaluated using a visual analog scale (VAS), and corneal fluorescein staining were assessed postoperatively at 1 month .

The study included sevent-nine patients were randomly divided into study group and control group. There were no statistical differences in age, the difference of sex among the groups(p>0.05). There were no statistically differences Schirmer test scores and TBUT in the study group at the postoperative(p> 0,05), but there was a statistically significant decrease Schirmer test scores and TBUT in the control group(p<0,05). The OSDI scores, corneal fluorescein staining score, VAS Burning and stinging sensation and VAS foreign body sensation were lower in the study group compared to the control group at postoperative 1 month(p<0,05).

3% trehalose and 0.15% sodium hyaloronic acid was effective and well tolerated in reducing dry-eye disease symptoms and improving the clinical outcome after cataract surgery.
