Abstract Details

To evaluate anterior segment parameters in patients after myopic and hyperopic photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) during the early postoperative period.

National Ophtalmology Centre named after acad. Zarifa Aliyeva

12 eyes (6 myopic and 6 hyperopic) of 7 patients (3 women and 4 men) were measured with the rotating Scheimpflug camera (Wavelight Oculyzer, ALCON) before, 1 day and 1 week after PRK. Anterior segment parameters corneal density, pachymetry, corneal volume (total volume and at 3-5-7 mm), anterior chamber depth (central and peripheral), anterior chamber angle, and volume were estimated.

Central corneal density was remarkably increasing during the 1 week follow-up. Density at 3mm from the apex increased at one day (p<0.05), and remained increased at one week postoperatively (p>0.05). Density at 4.5 mm from the apex increased significantly at 1 day, and decreased (p<0.05) at 1week after PRK. Mean pachymetry and corneal volume were significantly elevated one day after operation, and decreased nearly to their preoperative value (p<0.05) 1 week postoperatively. Anterior chamber volume, depth and angle seemed to be slightly decreased one day after PRK, and normalized at 1 week; however these changes were statistically not significant.

Rotating Scheimpflug camera showed an increase of corneal density in the ablation zone after PRK. Also an increase of corneal thickness was observed at one day, which resolved after one week, and can be explained with postoperative stromal oedema. Anterior chamber parameters were not significantly affected.
