Abstract Details


To report the outcome of trabeculectomy with MMC and both releasable/ controllable suture in cases of advanced glaucoma

Design: Prospective, non comparative, interventional case series study Patients and methods: Twenty five eyes of 19 patients with advanced glaucoma were consecutively recruited and underwent trabeculectomy with Mitomycin –C and releasable/ adjustable sutures. Releasable suture was removed after healing of the conjunctival wound, controllable sutures were manipulated with non toothed forceps later on to further lower the intraocular pressure. The patients wer followed up over a period of 6 months postoperatively Outcome measure: reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) with and without glaucoma medications to 12 mmHg or 40% of initial IOP and reported complications.


Nineteen eyes out of the 25 eyes enrolled in the study achieved a significant IOP lowering (40%) from 29.5 (5.5 StDev) preoperatively to 11.3 mmHg (2.8 StDev) 6 months postoperatively. The difference was statistically significant (P<0.0001). Six eyes failed to get a lowering effect of 40%, 4 eyes required additional antiglaucoma medications. However, 2 eyes required needling procedure. No intraoperative complications or early post operative complications recorded


The use of Releasable and adjustable suture technique in trabeculectomy is a safe and effective in lowering the IOP in advanced cases of glaucoma without exposing the risk of postoperative harmful complications
