Abstract Details

To evaluate the efficacy of estradiol eye drop compared with artificial tear eye drops for the treatment of dry eye in postmenopausal women.

Azadegan Street, Department of Ophthalmology, Imam Khomeini Hospital, Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences,Ahvaz, Iran

Twenty eight eyes of 14 menopausal patients with dry eye were evaluated. One eye was assigned randomly to receive artificial tear eye drops, Tearlose Sina Daru, and the other to receive estradiol eye drop two times a day each for eight weeks. Values for the Schirmer’s tests with and without anesthesia and tear breakup time (TBUT) test were assessed between the two groups at baseline, four weeks and eight weeks after the start of the treatment and four weeks after cessation of the treatment. Some of the dry eye related ocular symptoms were evaluated by questionnaire.

Mean age of the patients was 54.5 ± 3.9 years .Improvement in TBUT, Schirmer without and with anesthesia were statistically significant in each group, from base line at the fourth visit (P values 0.031, 0.009, 0.008 respectively). In comparison between the two groups only TBUT improved significantly in patients who received estradiol eye drop (P value 0.004). In treatment group dry eye severity reduced meaningfully compared with the control group (ϰ2=14.29 and df = 1 , P value < 0.001).

Estradiol eye drop may improve dry eye sign and symptoms in post menopausal women.
