Abstract Details

Compare between the effect of Trehalose, a new pharmaceutical eye drop, with established eye drop containing carboxymethylcellulose on treatment of RCES. Compare the tear BUT(Break up time),rose bengal staining and Schirmer. Monitor the long term use of both drugs for one month. Use it as an adjuvant treatment if eptithelial defect arises.

24 eyes of 24 patients were included in this pilot study. All were in the acute stage of RCES. 12 patients were given Trehalose for 15 days, and the other 12 were given the carboxymethylcellulose containing drop also for 15 days. Tear break up time(BUT), Schirmer, Rose bengal staining was done for all patients, and serial slit lamp photography was done every 3 days to monitor the healing process.

The study showed faster healing time with Trehalose, 1.2 days shorter time than the other drug As regards the other parameters of BUT,rose bengal, and Schirmer, there was no statistical significant difference between the two drugs.

A new additive effective drug has been added to the ocular pharmacology industry for management of dry eye conditions and epithelial instability cases like RCES, and showed faster recovery time in this study. Further studies should be conducted on a larger scale to determine if Trehalose containing eye drops will have distinguishing criteria than the other drugs in the market.
