Abstract Details

To evaluate the intraoperative difficulties and postoperative complications of cataract surgery in patients with pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome

Istanbul Education and Research Hospital Ophthalmology Clinic, İstanbul TURKIYE

This study were included 30 patients (33 eyes) with Pseudo exfoliation syndrome who underwent phacoemulsification and intra ocular lens implantation. The mean age was 71.85±6.19 years and Male to Female ratio was 12:18. Preoperativelly the presence of small pupils, zonularweakness, elevation of intraocular pressure in these eyes, intraoperative and postoperative complications were evaluated

Intraoperativelly pupillary distance was less than 4mm in 9 eyes and iris hook has been applied to all these eyes.İntraoperatively there were 18(%54.5) eyes of zonular weakness, 13eyes were measured ACD 2.17±0.21(≤2.5mm) and other 5 eyes were measured ACD 2.94±0.32(>2.5mm).All these eyes were performed capsule tension ring(CTR).PEX with glaucoma was seen in 14cases(%46.6).No posterior capsular rupture occurred in any of the cases intraoperative. In one case with glaucoma early capsular contraction was seen, Nd:YAG laser was performed. While preoperativelly BCVA was1.08±0.58LogMAR,final BCVA was 0.33±0.12LogMAR. While preoperativelly IOP was 19.35±7.18mmHg,postoperatively15.7±2.43mmHg in1th week were measured.

Cataract surgery in eyes with PXE has higher incidence of intraoperative and postoperative complications. In patients with PEX syndrome requires careful preoperatively planning for safe and successful surgery.
