Abstract Details

To compare the postoperative prediction errors (PE) of various biometric formulas in 2 groups of patients with preoperative anterior chamber depth (ACD) values over and under 3mms.

Rize Recep Tayyip Erdogan University Educational Hospital Ophthalmology Department

This retrospective study included 81 eyes of 81 cataract patients with normal axial length (22-25 mms) who underwent uneventful phacoemulsification surgery. Biometric measurements of the subjects were performed by Lenstar optical biometry. Subjects with preoperative ACD under 3mm formed the group 1 (n=40) and those over 3mm formed the group 2 (n=41). Intraocular lens powers were calculated using the Olsen, Hoffer-Q, SRK-II, SRK-T, Holladay and Haigis biometric formulas. Postoperative refractive results were recorded at 1st month after surgery. Mean PE values for each formula were calculated and the values were compared among two groups with appropriate statistical methods.

Mean PE values of patients in group 1 were 0.46±0.4, 0.37±0.3, 0.23±0.3, 0,36±0.3, 0,26±0.3, 0,45±0.4 and in group 2 were 0.23±0.3, 0.32±0.4, 0.36±0.3, 0.34±0.2, 0.35±0.3, 0.32±0.4 with Olsen, Haigis, Hoffer Q, SRK T, Holladay 1, and SRK II formulas, respectively. The Hoffer Q and Holladay formulas were significantly better predictors than the other formulas for the patients in group 1 and the Olsen formula was for the patients in group 2. The differences among two groups for the Olsen and Hoffer Q formulas were also statistically significant.

These values suggest that the Hoffer Q and Holladay formulas seem to be as a better choice for the patients whose ACD is less than 3mms and the Olsen formula for those more than 3mms.
