Abstract Details

To evaluate the efficacy of trehalose/sodium hyaluronate/carbomer eye drops ( THEALOZ ® gel / THEALOZ DUO ® gel ) for ocular discomfort and tear-film stability in patients undergoing cataract surgery

Department of Biomedical and Surgical Sciences, Ophthalmology Section, University of Perugia, S. Maria della Misericordia Hospital, Piazza Menghini 1, S. Andrea delle Fratte, 06156 Perugia, Italy

Patients scheduled for cataract surgery were included and randomized to receive trehalose/sodium hyaluronate/carbomer eye drops fix combination (group 1) or 0.9% unpreserved sodium chloride eye drops (group 2) , in addition to our post surgery standard protocol (topical antibiotic/corticosteroid and topical NSAIDs). Outcome measures were tear breakup time (TBUT), Schirmer test , ocular surface disease index (OSDI), dry-eye symptoms evaluated using a visual analog scale (VAS), corneal fluorescein staining (Oxford score) and patients satisfaction assessed with a visual analog scale (VAS). Patients were assessed immediately before surgery, 2 and 4 weeks after surgery. T-test was used for statistical analysis

40 patients completed the study. In group 1 (trehalose/sodium hyaluronate/carbomer eye drops) all outcome parameters significantly improved 4 weeks after surgery vs preoperative assessment (p<0,05 ), while no significant change occurred in group 2 , except an slight improvement of OSDI score. Therefore a statistically significant difference between the groups was observed for all outcome parameters except Schirmer test. Patients’ satisfaction resulted significantly higher in group 1 vs group 2 ( 9,6 vs 5,7 respectively; p<0,001). No adverse events were reported

Trehalose/sodium hyaluronate/carbomer eye drops were effective and well tolerated in relieving signs and symptoms of post cataract ocular surface discomfort and tear film stability
