Abstract Details

To evaluate early clinical outcomes after implantation of two extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses (IOL) AT LARA (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) and Tecnis Symfony IOL (Abbott Medical Optics, Santa Ana, USA).

Fundacion Hospital Nuestra Senora de la Luz, I.A.P., Mexico City

This prospective and comparative study evaluated 20 patients (40 eyes) that had bilateral cataract surgery with implantation of the EDOF AT LARA IOL and Symfony IOL. Distance, intermediate and near visual acuity, the defocus curve binocular and mesopic contrast sensitivity were measured one month postoperatively. Differences between groups were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U-test, p<0.05 was considered significant

Each group comprised 20 patients’ eyes. The mean logMAR uncorrected distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA) and near (UNVA) visual acuities  were 0.04±0.07, 0.12±0.13 and 0.27±0.14 in the AT LARA group;  0.24±0.20, 0.20±0.10 and 0.16±0.12 in the Symfony group, respectively. Significantly better UDVA (p=0.002) and UIVA (p=0.009) in the AT LARA group.  Both IOLs were comparable in near vision (p>0.05). The defocus curve showed that the AT LARA IOL provided better visual acuity from 0.00 to −4.00 diopter(D) (p<0.05) except for −2.50 and +1.50D. No significant differences were found in contrast sensitivity (p>0.05).

The EDOF AT LARA and Symfony IOLs are a useful tool to provide functional restoration of the visual function. The AT LARA IOL seemed to provide better distance and intermediate visual acuity than the Symfony IOL. Both IOL models were comparable in near vision and under mesopic conditions in contrast sensitivity.
