The aim of this study is to investigate elemental and microanalysis of aqueous humor and anterior lens capsule for the pseudoexfoliation syndrome

Thirty-one patients who underwent phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation due to senile cataract were included in this study. The anterior lens capsule and aqueous humor samples were obtained from the eyes of 16 patients with PEX syndrome and 15 patients without PEX. The level of selected elements (Zn, Cu, Se, Fe, Si) were determined from aqueous humor samples via Inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) machine. In addition, the morphology and elemental distribution of anterior lens capsules were carried out via a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (semi-quantitative EDX).


The ICP-OES results show that the level of Fe and Se in the aqueous humor do not show obvious difference in the PEX and control group. However, the Cu, Zn and Si(p<0.05) level of PEX syndrome are higher than the obtained from the patients without PEX syndrome. The SEM images show that different metal precipitates (Zn, Cu, Si) were obtained from anterior lens capsules with PEX syndrome. However there is no obvious precipitations on the anterior lens capsules without PEX syndrome. The Cu and Zn rate in the PEX anterior lens capsule are obviously higher than control group(p<0,05).


The elemental and microstructural analysis of aqueous humor and anterior lens capsule were investigated. The morphology of PEX anterior lens capsule includes different precipitations such as Zn, Cu and/or Si.  The ICP-OES and EDX analyses have confirmed that the level of Zn, Cu and Si are higher in the PEX syndrome for both anterior lens capsule and aqueous humor. It was observed that these elements were playing an important role in both PEX syndrome and morphologically.
