Abstract Details

To evaluate the efficacy of an innovative device - PCO RING implanted after IOL insertion after cataract surgery in preventing PCO.

Sankara eye hospital, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, India.

50 patients with bilateral grade 2 nuclear cataract were included in the study. Both eyes phacoemulsification was done 1 week apart by same surgeon with same parameters and same technique. One eye was implanted with PCO RING after IOL (hydrophobic) implantation and other was implanted with same IOL (hydrophobic) with out PCO RING. At 3 years post op, patients were valuated for occurence of PCO. 30 eyes with toric IOL implantation with PCO RING compared with 30 eyes with TORIC IOL eithout PCO RING for IOL rotational stability.

At 3 years, 11 ( 22%) eyes with out PCO RING developed PCO where as only 1 eye (0.5%) developed PCO in which PCO RING was implanted. Mean rotation of toric IOL at 3 months postoperatively was 2.85 ± 1.54° in eyes with PCO RING and 5.02 ± 1.06° in eyes without PCO RING. stastically significant in both studies.

Insertion of PCO ring along with IOL is effective in both controlling the PCO occurrence thus ensuring long term visual quality and enhances the rotational stability of TORIC IOL thus enhancing refractive outcomes.
