This study aimed at evaluating the postoperative vision recovery and corneamorphological changes after corneal stroma lpocket irrigation by Dex (Dex –amethasone) solution in Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE)

A prospective cohort study. 48 eyes from 24 patients who underwent SMILE procedure were included in the study. One eye in each case was randomly selected to have corneal pocket irrigation by Dexamethasone solution (experimental group), while the other eye was without irrigation (control group). Cornea morphological changes were observed by in vivo confocal microscopy and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) 1 day and 7 days after surgery. The uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and spherical equivalent(SE) between both groups were compared at 1 day, 7 days, 1 month after surgery.


no difference in UCVA and SE 1 , 7 days and 1 month after surgery between the groups (P>0.05).The morphological density of the same epithelium and matrix showed no difference between them 1 day before and 7 days after operation, and there was no high reflectance.The matrix activity at the cutting edge was similar.There was no difference in subepithelial nerve fibers and brachial nerves.The density and morphology of endothelium were similar and the cell boundaries were clear.Compared with OCT before and after operation, there was no lamellar space or effusion between them.There was no corneal edema in the incision area.


The irrigation by dexamethasone solution in corneal stromal pocket in SMILE surgery did not lead to significant effect on post-operative UCVA, SE, and corneal morphological changes at same and different times after surgery.
