The ocular surface has been at the forefront of the scene for several years and has prompted the development of tools for quantifying and characterizing its dysfunctions, with the aim in particular of circumventing the limits of subjectivity of clinical examination. We propose here the evaluation of a new and low cost interferometry platform for the analysis of tear film and meibomius glands.

100 patients were analyzed by the Lacrydiag ©(Quantel), proposing : measurement of NIBUT, height of lacrimal meniscus, thickness of the tear film in addition to the quality of blinking and to a meibography. This automated analysis was compared with the clinical examination, with BUT measurement, SPEED life questionnaire and Oxford fluorescein score.


The increase in the height of the lacrimal meniscus is correlated with the decrease in film thickness. The frequency of meibomian dysfunction increases with age with an incidence of 42% above 50 years, of which 50% are asymptomatic for the patient. Altered blinking quality is the dominant disorder, especially in the young population. The measurement of TBUT is not comparable to that of TBUT; whereas the presence of keratitis does not find any correlation with the different parameters mentioned.


This new platform allows the quantitative approach of new parameters for characterization of the ocular surface. It is a non-invasive, easily delegated, rapid and low cost automated test that helps to understand and objectively measure changes in the ocular surface. However, it will be necessary to define the threshold values of normality; in particular concerning the tear film rupture time, which should replace the subjective clinical measurement.
