Abstract Details


ISOPURE (PhysIOL, Liège, Belgium) is an enhanced posterior chamber monofocal IOL. It is based on the patented ISOFOCAL concept. The optic displays polynomial complex surface design parameters to extent the Depth of Focus compared to standard monofocal IOLs. The lens is purely refractive and fine-tuned for pupil independence. The preloaded IOL is made of a hydrophobic glistening free raw material. The four closed haptic design contributes to both predictive effective lens position and comfortable insertion. The ISOPURE was measured on an optical bench to evaluate the extension of the depth of focus with respect to monofocal IOL.

Optical features of ISOPURE were determined on an optical bench (Trioptics OptiSpheric IOL Pro2 , Wedel, Germany) using three different corneal models with spherical aberration from 0.0µ to 0.28µ (at 6 mm diameter), and with pupil sizes ranging from 2.0 to 4.5 mm. MTF at 50 Lp/mm, dioptric power and EDOF values were extracted from the defocus MTF curves for IOLs with powers from 10 to 35D. The outcomes were compared to results from an aspherical monofocal lens (MICROPURE, PhysIOL, Belgium). Additionally, first clinical outcomes were obtained and compared to clinical results from the mentioned aspherical monofocal IOL .


The trough-focus MTF curve of ISOPURE show a single but asymmetric peak which broadens towards higher optical powers. This contributes to extend the range of vision of the lens. The EDOF has increased by 50 % with respect to control IOL and is almost independent of the cornea type and pupil size. MTF at 50 Lp/mm and 3 mm pupil shows a mean value of 0.52 for a cornea with spherical aberrations of 0.28µ. The first initial clinical results seem to confirm an extended depth of focus with a significant broadening of the defocus curve.


This enhanced monofocal intraocular lens allows patients to experience high-quality vision at far distances and improved useful vision at intermediate distances. This is an important step for an expansion of the monofocal IOL category, as today most monofocal lenses only correct for far distances and thus do not improve the intermediate vision that is required for many daily tasks. Larger studies with longer follow up are needed to prove the optical concept of this new IOL and confirm the expected reduction of photic effects compared to multifocal IOLs.
