Abstract Details

A prospective, randomized, double masked, clinical trial was designed to evaluate visual acuity, defocus curves and contrast sensitivity in 60 patients symmetrically, and randomly, implanted with three different EDOF IOL designs (Tecnis Symfony ZXR00, Mini WELL Ready and AT LARA 829MP), six months after cataract intervention.

Ophthalmology Department of Santa Creu and Sant Pau Hospital, Barcelona, Spain.

Sixty patients were symmetrically and randomly implanted with the Tecnis Symfony ZXR00 (Johnson & Johnson Vision) (n=20), Mini WELL Ready (SIFI) (n=20) and AT LARA 829MP (ZEISS) (n=20). Six months after implantation, visual acuity was evaluated by assessing monocular distance corrected visual acuity (CDVA), monocular distance corrected near visual acuity at 40 cm (DCNVA) and monocular distance corrected intermediate visual acuity at 60 cm (DCIVA). Binocular defocus curves were obtained for defocus ranging from +1.50D to -4.50D, in 0.50D steps. Contrast sensitivity was assessed with the CSV-1000 test (Vector Vision) under photopic, mesopic and mesopic with glare conditions.

DCVA was better with the Symfony (-0.012 logMAR) than with the Mini WELL (0.051 logMAR) and AT LARA (0.049 logMAR). The Symfony offered better DCIVA (0.021 logMAR) than the Mini WELL (0.195 logMAR) and AT LARA (0.11 logMAR). Finally, the AT LARA (0.127 logMAR) and Mini WELL (0.1525) provided the best NDCVA. Regarding defocus, all lenses offered a continuous interval of good vision at intermediate distances, with a progressive decline in visual acuity towards near distances. The Symfony provided the best performance from intermediate to far distances. Finally, the Symfony offered the best contrast sensitivity in all illumination conditions.

The EDOF lenses have a good range of clear vision for intermediate and far distances, although their performance at near is poorer. These designs are the best choice for patients with intermediate visual needs, such as those working on the computer, and without critical visual requirements at near.
