YAG rates after multifocal intraocular lens implantations

Abstract Details


To report YAG rates for posterior capsular opacification after implantation of multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) that have been implanted over a period of three years.

Observational case series comprising data recorded between January 1st, 2013 and December 31st, 2016. 1421 procedures were performed during this three year period. All YAG procedures were identified from a theatre log book. The YAG procedures performed between January 1st, 2013 and March 10th, 2017 were associated with the initial procedures. The YAG rate was calculated as the number of YAG procedures divided by the number of IOL implantations and is also given for individual IOLs.


The overall YAG rate was 9.7%. YAG capsulotomy was performed on average 473�Â�±348 days after surgery. In 34% of eyes capsulotomy was performed within six months after surgery, in 46% of cases within 12 months, in 75% of cases within 2 years and in 96% of cases within 3 years.YAG rates for different Lentis IOLs with more than 2 years follow-up were as follows: MF15 15.8%, MF15 toric 6.7%, MF20 7.1%, MF30 11.8%, MF30 toric 17.1% and MplusX 9.5%. Rates for two more recently introduced IOLs (AMO Symfony and Zeiss AT LISA tri) were 1.3%, and 3.9% respectively.


This is a comparison of YAG rates for multifocal IOLs in a contemporary private hospital setting. A variation in YAG rates was observed between different IOLs. In order to better inform prospective patients during counselling, further studies reporting YAG rates with a wide range of currently available lenses would be useful.
