To compare glutathione S-transferase (GST) levels in malignant and benign eyelid tumors in otherwise healthy individuals.

We scanned pathology archives from October 2012 to April 2015for malignant eyelid biopsies, benign eyelid biopsies, and tissue removed during blepharoplasty and entropion operations. A total of 57 specimens were found. We divided the specimens into 3 group;malignant lesions, benign lesions, and controls (consisted of eyelid tissue removed during routine blepharoplasty).The pathology specimens were then stained using seven immunohistochemistry GST stains (GST-A, GST-P, GST-Z, GST-S, GST-K, GST-O, GST-T) and the intensity of staining was as graded from a scale of 0-3.


29 patients were female (50.8%). There were 13 patients in the malignant group, 20 patients in the benign group and 24 patients in the control group. Mean age was 66.0�ï�‚�±10.8 years in the malignant group, 62.4�ï�‚�±10.5 years in the benign group and 65.3�ï�‚�±11.1 years in the control group. In malignant group GST-O and GST-P staining was lower than the control group. In the benign group GST-P levels is lower than the control group. Differences among groups were statistically significant. There was no statistically significant difference between the intensity of staining in malignant and benign groups.


GST levels can vary in eyelid tumors. In our study, GST-P level was lower in malign and benign groups, and GST-O level was lower in the malign group. This result suggests that these enzymes can play a significant role in eyelid carcinogenesis.
