Abstract Details

This study had 2 purposes: 1) Determine the safety and efficacy of RLE + IOL as a refractive procedure. 2) Determine the effect on IOP and on Anterior chamber dimensions with RLE + IOL versus Peripheral Iridotomy

Wellington Eye Clinic, Dublin, Ireland

32 Eyes were treated with RLE + IOL for narrow angles while 14 eyes were treated with PI during the same time frame. All patients were hyperopic and had attended the clinic with a view to having LASIK surgery performed.

Refractive outcomes with RLE + IOL are excellent with a very high patient satisfaction index. Safety was excellent with more patients gaining lines of BCVA than losing lines of BCVA. In terms of the effect on the anterior chamber dimensions (anterior chamber volume, anterior chamber depth and anterior chamber angles as per the Pentacam), RLE was significantly superior on all 3 parameters.

RLE + IOL may be considered in cases where the anterior chamber is congested and the patient has a concomitant refractive error that they would like surgically corrected.
