EX-PRESS® implant position and function: comparative evaluation with UBM and OCT

This study evaluates the feasibility of anterior segment OCT and UBM for the imaging of the EX-PRESS® implant.

Ten eyes of 10 patients (6 males) with EX-PRESS® implant were examined. The Ellex Eyecubed (40MHz) UBM and the Zeiss Visante OCT systems were used. The filtering bleb morphology (BL), aqueous outflow (AS) and tube position (TB) were evaluated by 2 independent observers. Corneal and iris clearance from the tip of the tube (CC and IC, respectively) were also recorded.


AS was significantly higher in UBM whereas the opposite was true for TB. Differences in BL between OCT and UBM were statistically not significant.


According to these results, OCT may be more advantageous in assessing tube position in the anterior chamber whereas UBM may be more suitable for assessing aqueous outflow. Findings may be of value in cases where direct visualization of the implant is not possible, such as cases with opacified superior corneas or overhanging blebs.
