Abstract Details

To present clinical results in patients with severe dry eye syndrome treated with autologous serum eye drops.

Ophthalmology department of 3rd Medical Faculty and University Hospital Kralovske Vinohrady, Prague, Czech Republic

37 eyes of 20 patients with severe dry eye syndrome resistant to intensive topical lubricating and anti-inflammatory therapy were treated with autologous serum eye drops in 20-30% concentration. Besides usual ophthalmic examination including BCVA; Schirmer, break up time and osmolarity tests were performed. All of the patients completed a satisfaction questionnaire. Minimal follow up time was 6 months. BCVA, break up time and tear film osmolarity improved significantly. Schirmer test change was not statistically significant. 85% of the patient reported rapid subjective improvement after treatment initiation.

Autologous serum eye drops seem to be an effective option in the treatment of severe dry eye syndrome, especially in case of autoimune disease.
