Abstract Details

To discuss the visual and topographic results of cross linking in a young keratoconic patient of nine years old

Ministry of Health Ulucanlar Ankara Eye Education and Research Hospital, Turkey

The patient was a 9 years old girl. Her uncorrected visual acuities in the right and left eyes were counting fingers and 1.0, respectively. Her visual acuity in the right eye did not improve with correction. Corneal cross-linking was applied to the right eye. She was treated with hypoosmolar riboflavin with ultraviolet-A 10 minutes under topical anesthesia. The follow-up period was 4 months.

The mean preoperative Kmax was 57.1 diopters whereas the postoperative Kmax was reduced to 55.3 D at the last visit. The pachymetry changed from 434 to 357 micrometers. At the 4th month the uncorrected visual acuity was 0.4 and the best corrected visual acuity was 0.6 with Snellen chart.

Cross-linking with riboflavin can be performed effectively under topical anesthesia in a cooperative child as young as our patient. In our patient the improvement in uncorrected and corrected visual acuities were dramatic.
