Abstract Details

To study the efficacy of anterior capsule polishing on posterior capsule opacification (PCO) and anterior capsule opacification (ACO).

Gebze State Hospital,Department of Ophthalmology,Kocaeli,Turkey

150 cataract patients were submitted to anterior capsule polishing after phacoemulsification in a randomly chosen eye , and no treatment was delivered to the anterior capsule in the fellow eye.Hydrophopic IOLs were implanted in both eyes. PCO and ACO were measured during two years of follow-up.

The ACO rate was significantly lower in the eyes with extensive anterior capsule polishing (0.17 after two years) than that observed in eyes without anterior polishing (0.23 after two years).

Exhaustive polishing of the anterior capsule did not lower PCO intensity ; however, it did show less ACO two years after cataract surgery.
