Abstract Details

To study the pupil diameter and technical difficulties influenced by the femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery.

S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Complex Federal State Institution, Moscow, Russia.

363 patients (363 eyes) with the mean age of 68.9+9.7 (range 33-87) years were operated within the timeframe of 15 months. The rate of intra- and postoperative complications, pre- and postop BCVA, UCVA and IOP we analyzed. Special focus was on the pupil size and dynamics depending on the mydriatics protocol and the time in between the laser and surgical steps of the procedure.

After the laser step in some patients, progressive pupil miosis was observed. This phenomenon was medication protocol and time-dependent. In severe cases pupil expansion devices was used at the initial steps of phaco surgery. Most of the procedures went uneventfully, UCVA on the 1st postop day was 0.74+0.24 (range 0.02-1.0).

Preoperative madication protocol and waiting time in between the two (laser and surgical) steps are having significant impact on the pupil size and difficulties during the FLACS.
