Abstract Details

To compare graft detachment rate in Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty between surgeon preparation and eye bank graft preparation.

St. Paul’s Eye Unit, The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Hospital NHS Trust, Liverpool, UK

Retrospective UK data of 114 eyes undergoing DSAEK with or without concurrent cataract surgery from 2017 to 2019 were included in this review. Characteristics analyzed included type of graft harvesting, graft quality characteristics, graft diameter, type of procedure (combined with phacoemulsification or not), reason for graft, final best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), speed of recovery, graft detachment and re-bubbling rate.

77 eyes had surgeon prepared DSAEK grafts, 37 were prepared in Eye bank grafts. 17 partial graft detachments were shown. Graft detachment was similar if the graft was prepared in eye bank or by the surgeon. No difference in the detachment rate was shown in those combined with cataract surgery. Visual outcomes achieved were comparable among groups (p=0.8).

DSAEK tissue eye bank prepared is equally successful compared to the endothelial graft prepared by the surgeon in theatre.
