Abstract Details


To determine the effect of Autologous serum on corneal healing and prevention of recurrence of the Pterygium after excision to get the maximum benefit to the patient with least surgical manipulations.

Our study included thirty five eyes of patients who were admitted for pterygium excision, Autologous Serum was ordered and prepared for each. Surgical excision and bare area was done followed by subconjunctival injection of 0.5 ml of preprepared Autologous Serum around the edges of the bare area using a 29 guage syringe, the remaining amount of the serum was packed as a 50% Autologous Serum eye drops and used postoperative. Corneal Epithelial healing, conjunctival inflammation and rate of recurrence were our scale units, and patients were followed up at two days, one week, three months, six months and one year.


We conducted our study on thirty five eyes out of them only one (2.8%) showed recurrence after three months, corneal epithelial healing were recorded to be more rapid than conventional techniques (range of 2-3 days), as well as minimal conjunctival inflammation that persisted for two weeks postoperative in six cases (17.1%) and were easily treated by Prednisolone Acetate eye drops.


Surgical excision of the pterygium leaving a bare area with subconjunctival injection of Autologous serum and subsequent usage of Autologous serum eye drops showed better results with rapid corneal epithelial healing and thus less postoperative pain and early rehabilitation in addition to reduced rate of recurrence than other techniques. Moreover this technique carries the maximum benefit to the patient with least surgical manipulations.
