Abstract Details

To compare visual outcomes and optical performances of 2 different presbyopia-correcting IOL bilaterally implanted in cataract patients.

Ospedale Fatebenefratelli e Oftalmico, Milano, Italy

Patients were randomly allocated to 2 groups. Group 1 comprised 20 patients for a trifocal IOL implantation. Group 2 comprised 20 patients for an extended range of vision IOL implantation after phacoemulsification. Visual acuities, defocus curve, retinal stray light and iHOA were measured at 3 months after surgery. Data were compared with an additional control group consisted of a 20 eyes that underwent implantation of a monofocal IOL.

Differences in UDVA, CDVA and CNVA among the 3 groups were not significant. Both trifocal and extended range of vision IOLs provided much better UNVA and DCNVA than the monofocal IOL. Group 1 exhibited a statically better UNVA, DCNVA and defocus levels from -1.00 to -4.0 D than Group 2. No statistically differences were found in iHOA and retinal stray light values.

Patients implanted with both trifocal and extended range of vision IOL had good spectacle independence for near. Trifocal provided better results than the extended range of vision IOL in term of visual acuity and defocus data but similar quality of vision.
